On a clear day, the White Cliffs of Dover give far-reaching views across the English Channel to the coast of France. As England’s closest point to continental Europe, the area has always had to be on the defense– from Julius Caesar, to William the Conqueror, to Napoleon and to the Germans during the World Wars.
