Bogotá and the Weather

by Martin Ramirez

As a kid my dad used to tell me that predicting the weather in Bogota was easy.

“If the mountains were full of clouds it was because it was going to rain… If the mountains were not covered in clouds it was because it was already raining.”

Bogotá recently has been immersed in a heat wave caused by El Niño, that every day is becoming less a phenomenon and more playful. Each week we feel more comfortable wearing sandals, light-colors, and shorts, while in the past, Bogota was known for its sober, dark and, why not just say it, boring style. Nowadays, Bogotá wakes to find itself more like a European city in spring, and is calling its people to adapt their lives to the tropical city.

Climatologists predict that the effects of El Niño will impact Bogota until June. However, we should remember my dad: we all have to look at the mountains!
